Why it pays to give something back

Our Ground Control Julie Angell and Moonwalker Ray Angell have recently returned from climbing Ben Nevis to raise money (over £2,000!) for Demelza Hospice Care for Children. No mean feat, I’m sure you’ll agree.

Why have they done that? (I’m sure they were asking themselves that same question halfway up!) It’s all because Blue Rocket Accounting supports Demelza Hospice every year as part of its corporate social responsibility (CSR) programme.

CSR is a company’s sense of responsibility towards the community and environment in which it operates. But why should a business embrace CSR, and what benefits does it bring to a company?

  • It’s a motivating factor. Some companies, for example, donate a proportion of their profits to a charity. If your business supports a charity, where, for example, £20 pays for an essential operation for a 3rd World child, it really makes you think about working hard to ensure that you provide as many children as possible with that operation.
  • It helps to cut costs. If you implement a policy of re-using scrap paper, or ensuring that computers are shut down at the end of the day, not only will you be making a small impact on the environment, but you’ll soon see the cost savings to your business.
  • It’s a way to differentiate yourself from your competitors. If a customer thinks they will be helping a certain charity as a result of doing business with you; that may be the deciding factor between you and a competitor. It also positions you as a caring brand that goes out of its way to help others, which demonstrates how you would also treat your customers. And that’s appealing.
  • It’s become the norm. With more awareness on being environmentally friendly, it has probably got to the stage where customers will probably expect you to have recycling/re-using processes in place, being seen as being wasteful can have a negative effect on how you are perceived.
  • Customer engagement. It gives you an additional reason to get in touch with your customers, and your database. Letting them know about all the wonderful things you’re getting up to, perhaps asking for sponsorship for your latest charity initiative or inviting them to a charity event all helps maintain the interaction between you and your customers.
  • Engagement with your staff. CSR initiatives are a great way of motivating your employees, getting them involved with the company, improving relationships and doing something fun outside of the day-to-day activities of the business.

Plenty of reasons to get started, not only will it help to reduce costs, improve staff morale, but you know you’re doing something good for the community, all of which will give you that warm, fuzzy feeling!
